Rules of design are fundamentally important and are best used when you no longer choose to think about them. Rather you reach a point where you react to your environment by looking through the lens and determining via a gut level sensibility where the lens must be, and which lens is required to maximize the image opportunity at hand. This happens over time and is certainly not immediate. You can prepare for the transition, however, by developing and practicing a new way of thinking, and at the same time feeling about, your creative choices.

• Understanding the Dimensional Space within the frame and how your subject resides in it.
• Perception of ratios, visual weight, density & tonal weight in Emphasizing Dynamic Imbalance
• Understanding how to use Negative Space as a design element.
• Determining Inverse Values of light, shade, highlight & shadow, and juxtaposition.
• Exploring Color Value and its use as a design element.
• Creating thematic representations – “Finding the Story” within the frame
